The sixteenth edition of the Mallorca Jazz Festival in Sa Pobla has arrived at a time of economic
readjustments which make us reaffirm our commitment to the musical quality of the programme,
we intend to continue with the power, the energy, the dream, and the passion of those first years. In
difficult times, we want to get the audience involved in the concerts as an effective reply to public
social needs through participation in helping supportive projects.
In this year's edition, more than thirty musicians will participate in the four concerts which will be
held between the 4th
and 24th
August with an unquestionable high quality of music. The concerts are
free and there will be one held each week in the Plaza Major and in Can Cirera Prim Park. Leading
the opening of the concerts, will be the great pianist, McCoy Tyner, an institution in himself, the last
survivor of the John Coltrane quartet, which changed the face of jazz forever in the mid 60s. We
will continue in Can Cirera Prim Park with the offspring of a movie star, Kyle Eastwood, as well as
working on the soundtracks of his father, Clint's, films, he finds time to devote himself to playing
the double bass. The Mallorcan double bass player, José Vera, and his band will interpret their
version of jazz. The concert which will close the festival is the one corresponding to the end of the
Traveling School Seminar, where professional musicians and students coincide on stage and show
live what they have learnt and put together over the five days of the Jazz Seminar, which is in its
fifth edition under the coordination of the composer Jimmy Weinstein.
This musical offering is complemented by a magnificent art exhibition by the artist Biel Aguiló,
which runs throughout the Festival in the Es Cavallets hall in Plaza Major. Also, within the Festival,
the film, 'Invictus', by Clint Eastwood, will be shown, in which Kyle Eastwood is the theme
composer and arranger.
